A Quick Guide To Wet Rooms

A Quick Guide to Wet Rooms

If you’ve been looking into getting your bathroom re-done, you’ve probably heard the terms wet room, shower room, walk-in shower and more. It can be tricky to know what’s what if you’re not an expert.

Putting it simply, a wet room is a kind of bathroom that’s designed to get wet. Instead of a separate and enclosed shower area, wet room bathrooms are tiled and waterproofed, with a drain in the floor, and a showerhead sitting above it. Wet rooms are popular around the world, particularly in continental Europe, and are becoming increasingly popular in the UK.

The wetroomstop quick guide to wet rooms defines what a wet room is, looks at the advantages of having a wet room, and how to install a wet room at an affordable price.

What Is a Wet Room? (With Examples)

A wet room is a bathroom that has no barrier, or only a slight barrier, between the shower stall and the rest of the room.

A normal shower has several components that separate it from the rest of your bathroom: a shower tray (the bit on the floor), tall glass sides that may reach all the way up to the ceiling, and a door. If the showerhead is in your bathtub, then the sides of the bath, a glass pane and/or a shower curtain will keep it separated.

In a wet room shower, there are no barriers. As you can see from the picture to the right, there is no divider, and the drain sits flush with the tiled bathroom floor. If there is a divider, it’s a simple one without a door, and the shower is still on floor level.

Your wet room will still have a toilet, a sink and a cabinet so that it functions as a bathroom. The core difference is the shower.

Advantages of Having a Wet Room

Unless you’ve used one before, you might not know just how useful a wet room can be. Other than the stylish look of a wetroom, let’s take a look at all the reasons you should consider having one installed.

Couldn’t Be Easier to Clean

Wet rooms are designed for simple cleaning:

  • They’re often floor-to-ceiling tile, which is easy to wipe clean in seconds
  • Toilets and sinks can attach to the wall, not the floor, so you won’t get water collecting around them
  • You don’t need bath mats, shower curtains, or anything else that gets damp and attracts mould

Everything in a wet room is designed to get wet, so if you need to clean something, just spray it and wipe it down!

Disabled Wet Rooms are Accessible for Everyone

If you or somebody you love has mobility issues, then a wet room is the perfect solution. They won’t have to step over the side of the bath or up onto a shower tray… Plus, you can even set up your wet room so that they can use the closed toilet seat as a kind of shower chair.

Kids Love Wet Rooms

As a parent, do you find it difficult to convince your little ones to take baths? And do they hate the cold glass and damp shower curtain when they get in the shower?

If so, then a wet room might be just what you need. They’re easily accessible for little legs, there’s lots of room if you need to be in there with them, and you don’t have to tell them off if they want to splash water everywhere!
