We all know that duct tape can be used for a variety of purposes, from fixing a broken chair to packing boxes and repairs. But one question that we often get asked here at Wetroomstop is whether or not duct tape is waterproof, and can it be used in conjunction with our waterproofing kits.
In this blog, we cover whether there is such a thing as waterproof duct tape and if it’s the right solution for your bathroom:
Is Duct Tape Waterproof or Just Water-Resistant?
Unfortunately, duct tape is not waterproof and is only designed to be water-resistant. While it may be able to resist water for a short period of time, it will eventually start to break down and allow water to pass through.
Duct tape is made of three layers of material:
- The bottom layer of sticky tape is coated with adhesive, usually made from natural rubber.
- The middle layer consists of a cloth grid with variable thread count depending on the grade of tape.
- Surrounding everything is an outer polythene layer to repel water and bond all layers together.
The glue on the bottom layer is designed to stay effective for an extended amount of time - usually lasting at least 6 months. However, it will gradually weaken over time.
In fact, when the duct tape is in contact with a wet surface, the adhesive weakens much quicker, the duct tape loses its stickiness much faster, and it becomes unable to seal the surface well. Even if the tape is exposed to water over a short period of time, the tape may still peel away completely.
How Long Does Duct Tape Hold?
While duct tape is not waterproof, it can be used in wet conditions if you need a quick fix. If you are using duct tape to patch a hole in a wet room or bathroom, it is best to apply the tape as soon as possible so that it can start bonding with the surface.
Duct tape usually holds up for over a month in wet conditions, but this varies between brands of duct tape and is not a long-term solution. For a more permanent fix, you will need to use a waterproof sealant or patch.
Alternatives to Duct Tape
While duct tape is not waterproof, there are other ways that you can waterproof your wet room or bathroom:
Silicone sealant
Silicone sealant is a versatile type of caulk that is a long-lasting waterproof solution for repairing cracks and leaks. Some common uses for silicone sealant include caulking around bathtubs and showers, sealing windows and doors, and filling gaps in walls.
Bath sealant tape
This is a waterproof repair tape that can be used to seal cracks and leaks in your wet room or bathroom. It is designed to withstand water and will last for years, making it a great alternative to duct tape.
PCI Lastogum
PCI Lastogum is a waterproofing sealant that can be used to seal leaks in your wet room or bathroom. It is a long-lasting solution that will keep your space watertight for years to come.
Conclusion
If you're looking for a quick fix, duct tape can be used in wet conditions, but it's not a long-term solution and will eventually break down. For a more permanent solution, it is best to consider using silicone sealant, waterproof repair tape, or PCI Lastogum instead.
